Daniel Bellow Porcelain is made by hand on the potter’s wheel, one piece at a time. While I make every effort to make things come out in sets, (the span of my left hand, thumb to pinky, is exactly nine inches) I’m only human. I use a gas kiln that I adjust by hand according to the sound of the burners and the color of the flame, which is all to say that some variation in size, shape and color is to be expected. This, of course, is the whole point of handmade pottery in a world of machines.
Dinnerware, dishwasher and microwave safe, comes in two designs. The Lotus style bowls and plates have a cut rim in a six-pointed lotus flower pattern. Wherever the Buddha walked, lotus flowers sprang up in his footsteps, and the six-pointed star of the Magen David represents the interpenetration of the lower and higher worlds. You can laugh at this mystical stuff if you want, but there really is something pleasing and harmonious about this shape. The Square style is cut on four sides and then spun back into round on the wheel. All cups and kitchen pieces are squared and then rounded again.
All shapes are available in all glazes, and orders for things that are not in stock are done in six to eight weeks.
